There are some projects that stay with you, and You & I is certainly one of them.
Over the past two years, more than 1,000 children from 22 schools across Stockton-on-Tees have been creating their own clay sculptures, each one representing themselves and holding a heart or something that means something to them.
Every single figure is different. Some hold favourite things, some represent people or pets they love, and others are simply a wonderful expression of the child who made them.
What started as a simple idea has grown into something pretty extraordinary.
The children took part in workshops led by Rachel Shepherd from Yarm Prep School and artist Jessica Jenyns, learning about clay and sculpture while being given the freedom to create something completely their own. For me, that is what makes this project so special. Art gives people a voice, and sometimes it gives us a way to express things that are difficult to put into words.
I was lucky enough to see the project develop and to meet some of the children along the way. Seeing their sculptures come together was fantastic, but seeing all 1,000+ figures together is something else entirely.
It really is quite a sight.
After first being displayed at Stockton Waterfront, I’m incredibly proud that You & I has now come to Mackenzie’s very own gallery, Arthaus in Richmond, where the sculptures are filling the upstairs gallery.
Seeing them all together is a reminder that while we are all individuals, we have so much in common too. Every figure tells its own story, but together they become something much bigger: a celebration of childhood, creativity, community and connection.
I’m so proud to have been part of this project and to see the children’s work given a space in my own gallery.
And because so many people have come to see it, You & I has been extended by popular demand until Saturday 4 October.
So if you haven’t made it to Arthaus yet, there is still time.
Come and see the incredible collection of little clay figures for yourself. Take your time, spot the details and imagine the stories behind them.
You & I is a celebration of 1,000 young people, 1,000 individual voices and the wonderful things that can happen when creativity is given a chance.
A huge thank you to Yarm School, Rachel Shepherd, Jessica Jenyns, Jacksons Law Firm and everyone involved in bringing You & I to life, as well as the 22 schools, teachers, families and, most importantly, the children who made it all possible.
